The Hand of Fatima or Hand of Miriam, also known as the Hamsa or Khamsa, means “five”, and holds a sacred value in the Jewish and Muslim religions. The symbol can be traced back to the first Sumerian and Babylonian religions and their female deities known as Inanna and then Ishtar, tied to fertility, carnal love and beauty, as well as the fertility of the Earth.
In terms of Judaism, the five fingers of the hand are seen as representing the five books of the Torah [Genesis (Bereshit), Exodus (Shemot), Leviticus (Vayikra), Numbers (Bamidbar) and Deuteronomy (D’varim)], and are often engraved above prayers such as the Shema (prayer of Jewish liturgy), the Birkat HaBayit (Blessing of the house) or Tefilat HaDerech (Traveller’s prayer).
The five fingers of the hand are also reminiscent of the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, “He”, one of the blessed names of God.
